Father's Support in the Breastfeeding Process

Providing support during the breastfeeding process not only helps mothers feel more comfortable, but it also significantly contributes to the success of breastfeeding. Unfortunately, many mothers express that they do not receive enough support from their partners. Having fathers more actively involved in this process can help mothers cope with the challenges they face.

A study conducted in Italy showed that when fathers received breastfeeding training, breastfeeding rates increased during the first six months. In a similar study conducted in our country, it was determined that fathers' reluctance to support breastfeeding led to a decrease in the mother's milk supply and, in some cases, to the cessation of breastfeeding. This results in unwanted outcomes for both the mother and the baby.

In one of my previous posts, I discussed how fathers can support the breastfeeding process. You can read that article here. A father's support is crucial for boosting the mother's morale and overcoming the challenges faced during breastfeeding.

Trust Your Body and Support Natural Processes

Trust in the fact that the female body is equipped with everything it needs to nourish her baby. Nature has endowed mothers with the capacity to feed their babies. However, sometimes mothers face issues like insufficient milk production. In such cases, instead of immediately turning to formula, seeking help from a breastfeeding consultant can be much more effective. Formula should be used only as a last resort for milk insufficiency. Instead, there are many methods that can make the breastfeeding process healthier, and I will share more details on these methods in my next post.

Remember, every woman who can become pregnant has the capacity to nourish her baby. By listening to her body, trusting herself, and following the right guidance, this process can be carried out healthily. Having fathers actively involved in this process will lead to healthier outcomes for both the mother and the baby.

Sleeping In The Same Bed With The Baby

Should You Sleep in the Same Bed with Your Baby? I still remember the first night I brought my baby home. The house was quiet, but my mind was loud with worry. Every little sound he made had me sitting up, checking his tiny chest to make sure he was still breathing. It felt unnatural to put him in his crib, just a few feet away, when all I wanted was to hold him close. That’s when I first wondered—should I just let him sleep next to me? Wouldn’t it be easier? Safer? Warmer? The idea of bed-sharing has been around for centuries. Many cultures see it as the most natural way for a mother and baby to sleep. In Japan, for example, the practice is called "kawa no ji," where the mother, father, and baby sleep together in a pattern resembling the kanji for "river" (川). Meanwhile, in Western societies, pediatricians often warn against it, citing safety concerns. So, who is right? The Science and the Stories Dr. James McKenna, a leading researcher on mother-infant sleep, argu...
